Goldberg, Jeffrey. “Why Israel Can’t Make Peace With Hamas.” The New York Times 14 January 2009.
Online. 27 August 2013
In the article “Why Israel Can’t Make Peace With Hamas,” Jeffrey Goldberg describes the current war in the Gaza strip between the Palestinian political group Hamas and Israel. Goldberg uses a couple of interviews to help people understand some of the problems that make peace in Israel and Gaza difficult. The author provides a history of the situation and includes some information he acquired from some important contacts he made. Goldberg shows the near impossibility of peace by contrasting interviews with a member of Hamas and a member of Hezbollah. This shows how deeply anti-Israel beliefs are amongst different parts of the Muslim community in the Middle East. The author uses the interviews and his experience to make it clear that Hamas will continue to fight unless Israel is successful making peace with Fatah in the West Bank.

Position A: Israel can only make peace with Hamas by continuing to help Fatah in the West Bank continue to be successful
Mr. Rayaan, a source in the article, accuses the author of being in the CIA. The implication is that Hamas is hyper paranoid and maybe through Fatah’s success, he mentions this later, Hamas will cease fighting. Ethos, LOGOS “Israel killed him two weeks ago.” The author shows the horror of the conflict and also raises the credibility of himself and source by mentioning that he was member of ruling elite and probably targeted. PATHOS, ETHOS Hamas is in competition against Hezbollah. The implication again is that unless Israel shows success with Fatah the violence will continue. LOGOS |
Position B: (the opposite): Israel CAN NOT make peace with Hamas by continuing to help Fatah in the West Bank continue to be successful
“Fatah . . . had become Mr. Rayyans direst enemy” The author uses a quote from Rayaan to make this point. Also, he uses this quote to represent Hamas as a whole. Negotiations won’t work. ETHOS, LOGOS Both Hamas and Hezbollah feel that “God is opposed to a Jewish state in Palestine.” With this deep seeded belief, force will be the only way the conflict is ended. LOGOS Hezbollah spokesmen argues that the holocaust didn’t happen. This outrageous quote shows the difficulty in brokering some kind of agreement between Israel and Palestinian. PATHOS Hamas and Hezbollah actually have many differences such as different theologies. The implication is that since they have different views and Hezbollah is committed to violence, maybe Hamas may be open to negotiations. LOGOS, ETHOS |
